Decision to set up third LNG terminal at Maheshkhali sea

Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) has been imported since 2018. There are two floating terminals (FSRUs) in the sea of ​​Maheshkhali to supply processed gas from abroad to the national grid. There is still a shortage of gas. So the government has decided to set up another terminal in the sea of ​​Maheshkhali. It is expected to bring 500 million cubic feet of gas daily to the grid through this terminal by 2023. The Department of Energy has instructed Petrobangla to expedite the testing of the third FSRU.

At present the daily demand of gas in the country is 420 crore cubic feet. According to Petrobangla, 313 crore cubic feet of gas was supplied to the country last Tuesday. The deficit was 107 crore cubic feet. Of this, 70 crore cubic feet came from imported LNG. In other words, 243 crore cubic feet have been found from the country’s gas fields. If new gas fields are not discovered, this production of domestic gas will decrease further in the coming years. According to the master plan for the gas sector in 2017, the demand for gas in the country will be 440 crore cubic feet in 2025. On the one hand, demand will increase, on the other hand, domestic gas production may decrease. This will increase the deficit. The third terminal to handle this pressure.
