Rice imported from India is ‘substandard’, unloaded off

The Food Department has stopped unloading rice from ships due to the high number of dead, damaged and faded grains in rice imported from India. The consignment of imported rice was being unloaded at Chittagong port. Normally, in case of taking rice, there is a provision of 2 to 3 percent dead, spoiled and discolored rice, but the unloading of rice is stopped due to the large quantity of rice in the ship.

Chittagong Regional Food Controller (RC Food) Zahirul Islam confirmed the matter at noon on Saturday (August 7th).

He said the food ministry decided to import rice from India under the G2G (Government to Government) agreement to address the country’s internal food crisis. Under this, 19,200 tons of rice was brought in a ship named MD Dragon. After unloading about 2,000 tonnes of rice, the issue of low quality of rice came to the notice of the food department on Thursday. Then the unloading of rice was stopped.
