Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader today inaugurated the works of master plan preparation and preliminary feasibility study for construction of metro rail in Chattogram port city.
The minister inaugurated the works virtually connecting from his official residence here as chief guest.
Speaking on the occasion, he said this dream project of the young generation will play an important role in easing traffic congestion and building a sustainable transport system in the port city.
Like Dhaka, metro rail will become very attractive in Chattogram too, he added.
Quader, also the General Secretary of Bangladesh Awami League, said the people of Chattogram will remember today's special occasion forever in terms of transportation.
In his speech, he highlighted various development works of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government, carried out in Chattogram, including the construction of another marine drive, the upgrading of road to six lanes and the Chattogram-Cox's Bazar road into four lanes.
The road transport and bridges minister said once Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gives time, the country’s first Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel built beneath the Karnaphuli River in Chattogram will be inaugurated soon.
He said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the construction work of the country’s first underground metro rail MRT Line-1 in Dhaka on February 2 next.
AL Joint General Secretary and Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud, South Korean Ambassador to Bangladesh Jang-Keun, Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges Prof Rowshan Ara Mannan, Chattogram City Mayor Rezaul Karim Chowdhury, Economic Relations Division Secretary Sharifa Khan, Chattogram Development Authority Chairman M Zahirul Alam and Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA) Executive Director Sabiha Parveen were, among others, present at Hotel Radisson Blu in Chattogram.
