After a long hiatus, freight trains have started plying through the borders of Haldibari in India and Chilahati in Bangladesh. Two and a half thousand tons of stones were brought to Bangladesh using the railway on the first day on Sunday. The Ministry of Railways has informed that the stones will be brought in 40 wagons at around 2 pm. On the other hand, the office of the Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka said that from now on, regular freight trains will run on this route.
In a press release issued by the Indian High Commission, the two Prime Ministers of India and Bangladesh have pledged to re-establish all pre-1965 rail links between the two countries. For this reason, the Ministry of Railways of both the countries took up the task of restoring the railway connection. After the restoration, the Haldibari-Chilahati rail link was jointly inaugurated by the Prime Ministers of India and Bangladesh during the Prime Minister's Virtual Bilateral Summit on 17 December 2020. This is the fifth rail link between India and Bangladesh.
