Wheat imported worth Tk 400 crore at Bhomra land port
Wheat import at Bhomra land port in Satkhira has increased at a huge rate. In the fiscal year 2020-21, which is coming to an end this month, about one and a half lakh tonnes of wheat has been imported through this port. The market value of these imported wheat is Tk 400.97 crore. Traders and importers say the demand for the product is higher in the domestic market than at any other time. As a result, imports have increased more than two thousand times as compared to the previous financial year.
Akbar Ali, senior revenue officer in charge of Bhomra customs station, said 1,48,267 tonnes of wheat was imported through the port in the 11 months from July to May of the 2020-21 fiscal year. During the same period of 2019-20 fiscal year, only 65 tons of wheat was imported through the port. These wheat were imported at a cost of Tk 14 lakh. Imports declined in the last financial year due to Kavid lockdowns and restrictions. However, this year the imports increased at an unusual rate as restrictions were relaxed.
