Sugar prices have started falling in Nitaiganj, Narayanganj, the country's largest wholesale market for consumer goods. The price of sugar has come down by Rs 100 per bag (50 kg) in a week. The price has come down by 2-4 rupees per kg.
In this regard, the traders said that the supply of sugar is more than the demand in the market. Besides, the price of raw sugar in the international market has come down. Mainly due to these reasons, the price of the product has come down in the country's market. However, even though prices fell in the wholesale market, it did not affect the retail market.
It can be seen in the market that sugar is being sold at Tk 66 per kg in the wholesale market. The product was sold in this market before Eid at a price of Tk 68-70 per kg. A syndicate of traders deliberately raised prices during Eid, the concerned claimed. Besides, with the increase in the price of raw sugar in the international market, the price of sugar was also increased at the mill gate. Unscrupulous traders do this to destabilize the market. However, at present the price of the product is also lower in the country's market as the price of raw material is lower.
