ERF condemns LR Global’s threat to Niaz Mahmood
The Economic Reporters Forum (ERF) has condemned Niaz Mahmud, a staff reporter of the daily Dhaka Tribune, for threatening to sue under the Digital Security Act of LR Global Asset Management Company Limited.
A statement signed by ERF President Sharmin Rinvi and General Secretary SM Rashidul Islam condemned the move.
In a legal notice sent to the Dhaka Tribune on Sunday (March 28), LR Global threatened to sue under the Digital Security Act. The ERF strongly condemned such incidents.
“We consider the threat to be an attack on freedom of expression,” the ERF statement said. We believe that any disgruntled person or organization has the right to take defensive action against unreasonable reports. But the ERF is closed in protest of any move by the Digital Security Act against anyone. Even the country’s civil society, rights groups, journalists’ society and the editorial council want to change some sections of the law.
The statement further said. We hope LR Global will reconsider their Digital Security Act. Otherwise ERF will stand against LR Global in the interest of its members.
