Prime Minister will inaugurate two aircraft on March 14
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate two new aircrafts to join the fleet of national flag carrier Biman Bangladesh Airlines on March 14. The aircraft have been procured on a GTU basis between the governments of Bangladesh and Canada. The Prime Minister has named the two aircraft. One is called Akash Tari, the other is called Shwet Balaka.
On August 1, 2018, an agreement was signed for the purchase of three new Dash-8 Q400 NG aircraft for Biman Bangladesh Airlines. Biman signed the agreement with the Canadian Commercial Corporation (CCC). Under the agreement, the Canadian aircraft manufacturer will supply Bombardier Inc. aircraft. Bombardier later sold the rights to their Dash-8 series aircraft to another aircraft manufacturer, De Havilland. Export Development Canada (EDC), a Canadian government agency, has provided loan assistance for the purchase of the aircraft.
According to the agreement, three aircraft were supposed to be delivered in early 2020, but were delayed due to the Corona epidemic. The first of the three Dash-8 aircraft, Dhruv Tara, was added to the fleet on December 27, 2020. The second aircraft Akash Tari arrived in the country on 24 February and the third aircraft Shwetabalaka on 5 March.
