10 million dollars assistance from Japan and UNHCR

The Government of Japan and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) will provide an additional 10 million dollars for the development of water supply and distribution systems for the local and Rohingya communities in the coastal Cox’s Bazar district upazila. For this, both the parties executed an agreement on 28 February.

The agreement was signed at a ceremony held at the UNHCR Bangladesh’s Dhaka office by Ito Naoki, Ambassador of the Japanese Embassy in Bangladesh, and Fumiko Kashiwa, Assistant Representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Bangladesh.

For a long time, the local people of Teknaf Upazila have been facing various adversities due to the problem of safe water. The situation has become more critical in recent years as the Rohingya have been forcibly expelled from Myanmar and taken refuge in Bangladesh. This assistance will contribute to stabilizing water supply and improving the quality of life of both communities.
