gas crisis is likely to intensify due to supply shortages

Bangladesh Oil, Gas and Mineral Resources Corporation Petrobangla is struggling to cope with the ongoing irrigation season in the country. Summer is starting with that. Due to the reduction in natural gas, the government is importing LNG (liquefied natural gas) at a higher price and the supply to the grid is less. 200 million cubic feet of LNG is going less than usual.

The gas crisis has started this time due to a large shortage of supply in residential and industrial areas including the capital. The crisis is expected to intensify. According to Petrobangla, in a letter to the Finance Department under the Finance Ministry on January 20, Petrobangla demanded Tk 1,094 crore to operate the two floating LNG terminals. Petrobangla sources said that despite the cooperation of the Energy Department, no response was received from the Finance Department.

It is learned that at present there are two LNG terminals in the country by US-based company Accelerate Energy and local private company Semitic Group.
