Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) has organized a road-show titled "The Rise of Bengal Tiger: Potentials of Bangladesh Capital Markets" in Dubai that has commenced today (February 9) to reach out to non-resident Bangladeshi (NRB) investors and attract foreign investment in Bangladesh. The road-show has been sponsored by UCB Stock Brokerage Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of United Commercial Bank Limited. The road-show will continue till Friday (February 12).
The Chairman of BSEC, Professor Shibli Rubayat-Ul-Islam chaired the road-show. He gave the closing remarks and highlighted the important role of the capital market for raising long term funds to solve the maturity mismatch problem long prevailing in our banking sector. He emphasised the risky nature of the market and focused on the importance of research and professional investing approach for sustained return from the capital market. He thanked the Non-resident Bangladeshis (NRBs) for their contribution in the development of Bangladesh. He praised the current leadership of Bangladesh and also thanked the distinguished guests attending the session.
Honourable Minister, Ministry of Land, Peoples Republic of Bangladesh, Mr. Saifuzzaman Chowdhury, MP has graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. He gave an inspirational speech sharing his personal experiences to explain the risky nature of the capital market, emphasizing the need for proper research and disciplined investment approach. He praised the current leadership and also thanked the present commission for their various new initiatives.
The State Minister for Youth and Sports, Md Zahid Ahsan Russell, MP attended the event as the Special Guest and thanked the NRBs for the windfall remittance which helped Bangladesh during the pandemic.
The Chairman of the Executive Committee of United Commercial Bank Limited, Mr. Anisuzzaman Chowdhury attended as the Special Guest and thanked the current government, as well as the new commission for their relentless efforts in achieving stricter implementation of regulations in the capital market.
Mr Arif Khan, CEO, IDLC Limited was the keynote speaker of the session. He gave an overview of the economy and the capital market of Bangladesh, and also highlighted the need to avoid speculation and invest in companies with better corporate governance and fundamentals.
Mr Mohammad Rahmat Pasha, CEO, UCB Stock Brokerage Limited gave a presentation and explained the investment procedure and incentives available for Non-resident Bangladeshi (NRB) investors. He also announced that UCB Stock Brokerage Ltd will open a digital booth on 12th February in Dubai which will be the first ever digital booth on foreign soil.
Professor Md. Masudur Rahman, Director, DSE and Mr Mohammed Mahtabur Rahman, Chaiman Al Haramain Group also presented their valuable speech.
Mr Mahbub ul Alam, Executive Director, BSEC, Mr Sayedur Rahman, President, BMBA, Mr M Shaifur Rahman Mazumder, COO, DSE, Mr Ashequr Rahman, MD Midway Securities, Mr Khandoker Saffat Reza, CEO & Director, Lanka Bangla Securities attended as panellists in the question and answer session.
The BSEC Chairman also launched the online account opening portal in the program from where the NRBs will be able to open their accounts online.
Various high officials of BSEC including commissioner Mr. Khondoker Kamaluzzaman have also been present. From United Commercial Bank Limited, Mr Asifuzzaman Chowdhury, Director, Dr. Md. Jonaid Shafiq, Director; Mr. Bashir Ahmed, Director; Shekh Mohammad Rashedul Hasan, CEO, UCB Asset Management Limited; Tanzim Alamgir, CEO, UCB Investment Limited; and some top officials have attended the road-show.
A number of senior dignitaries from various communities of Dubai have also been present in the road-show.
The road-show is taking place in the Creek ballroom of Park Hyatt, Dubai. There have been two sessions hosted in the inaugural day. The first session was titled “Investor Summit (NRB): Bangladesh Capital Market”. Non-resident Bangladeshi investors have become acquainted with investment opportunities in Bangladesh capital market in that session.
There has been a similar session in the afternoon with the aim of appealing to other foreign investors. This road-show is expected to increase the market participation of foreign and NRB investors in the Bangladesh capital market.
On the final day, UCB Stock Brokerage Limited will launch the first ever foreign digital booth outside Bangladesh. The booth will be inaugurated by the BSEC Chairman. The digital booth is one of the new initiatives of this commission.
