Over 2000 infected in on day, 15 dead
The highest number of 2029 fresh coronavirus positive cases have been recorded in the last 24 hours. With this, the total number of confirmed cases climbed to 40,321 in the country. Besides, 15 more people have died from the lethal virus during the time, raising the death toll from the pandemic to 559.
DGHS Additional Director General (administration) Prof Nasima Sultana came up with the disclosure joining the daily health bulletin of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) through online on Thursday.
A total of 9,310 samples have been tested at 49 authorised coronavirus testing labs across the country including the Institute of Epidemiology Disease Control And Research (IEDCR) over the last 24 hours. Of these, 2029 have been diagnosed with coronavirus, bringing the total number of positive cases to 40,321, she said. This is the biggest single-day spike in new cases since the first COVID-19 cases were detected in the country on March 8.
About the new 15 fatalities, Prof Nasima said that 11 of them are male and four female. Among them, two were aged between 31 and 40, five between 51 and 60, five between 61 and 70, two between 71 and 80 and one other between 91 and 100. According to the division-wise data, seven deaths took place in Dhaka division and eight in Chattogram division.
Besides, 500 new people have recovered from the novel coronavirus over the past 24 hours, raising the total number of recoveries in the country to 8425, the health official said.
The first coronavirus death was reported in the country on March 18, ten days after detection of the first COVID-19 cases.
