Bangladesh confirms one more death in coronavirus

Bangladesh on Wednesday confirmed one more death in coronavirus but said no new patient infected by the virus was found in the last 24 hours.

Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research director Meerjady Sabrina Flora revealed this information at a press conference at her office in the afternoon.

The victim, aged around 60, had comorbidity of diabetes and hypertension.

Two cured were released from hospital and 27 were taking treatment, said Meerjady Sabrina Flora.

‘Currently 47 suspected patients are in isolation and 47 others in institutional quarantine,’ she said.

So far, 39 COVID-19 patients were detected across Bangladesh since March 8.

Limited scale community transmission feared as source of infection of two patients were still not found, said the IEDCR director.

Members of the Armed Forces, meanwhile, started their fieldwork in Dhaka and elsewhere in the country in the morning to help the civil administration ensure that people maintain social distancing and coronavirus suspects remain in quarantine to prevent the spread of the deadly virus.

The authorities, on March 24, closed all public transport services on railways, waterways and domestic airways in the country while thousands of people overcrowded the terminals in the capital as the government on Monday announced a 10-day public holiday from March 26 to April 4.

Movement of passenger trains, launches and domestic flights would remain suspended until further notice to check the spread of COVID-19.

The death toll from the coronavirus infection or COVID-19 has jumped to 18,895 globally as of Wednesday.

It has so far infected 422,629 people around the world, according to worldometer.

Of them, 294,855 are currently being treated with 13,095 being in serious or critical condition.

So far, 127,774 cases had outcomes and of them, 108,879 (85 per cent) recovered and 15 per cent died.

The World Health Organisation on March 11 declared the coronavirus crisis a pandemic.
